Our Local Outreach is lead by a team of volunteers who look for ways we can engage and serve our local community. The leader of this team is Bob Connors, and Pastoral Support is provided by Arvin Engelson.
Outreach Newsletter July & August 2023
Welcome to our July/August Outreach Newsletter! Support for outreach is now raised separately. To give, please visit www.saratogafederated.org/give and select “give online,” then “outreach – general” on the dropdown menu.
The primary emphasis of our Outreach Teams at SFC has been to help those in need who are facing severe challenges, and to promote awareness of the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ. In this and future newsletters, we will highlight areas where your outreach contributions have been deployed and make you aware of volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference. Where is God stirring your heart? You are invited to join in!
Transformation in San Jose
Annika John shares Ana Torres’ story of transformation. Annika writes:
I have had the joy of mentoring Ana for the past seven years, journeying with her through the joys and suffering of life on the margins. Ana is a friend, neighbor, mentee, co-minister, and tia (aunty) to my daughter, Seylah. She has become family. Ana has a Moses story. She faced incredible trauma, heartbreak, and disorientation from growing up in our neighborhood and was hoping for a way out someday.
She has wrestled with an invitation from God to move back into the messiness and the pain to be a part of the healing and liberation of her community. Praise God! She said YES!
She is now preparing to become the next youth pastor of our church, Shalom Iglesia del Pacto. This call is a heavy one and also one of great joy, requiring emotional and spiritual breakthroughs. After an intense season discerning her spiritual gifts, she boldly shared a word from God to my husband, Josef, that moved him to tears. She has learned that her spiritual gifts are not just gifts meant to be enjoyed by others, but they are a gift to herself as she is healed and transformed through her personal encounters with the Holy Spirit. Ana has become a fierce advocate for inner-healing for her community. This summer she modeled her deep inner life – committed to weekly counseling, worship, prayer, reflection, and mentorship – to other youth and emerging leaders.
Transformation is beautiful. I am proud of Ana every day, and I am so glad God has joined my story to hers.
Servant Partners is a movement centered on Jesus Christ, planted in urban poor communities, and empowered to pursue community transformation. We plant churches, organize communities, and partner with local leadership towards individual, communal, and systemic transformation. We are inspired by the model of Jesus, who “became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood” (John 1:14, The Message). Joining with local leaders, we work to transform our urban community in positive, sustainable ways.

9 Signs of a Transforming Community:
1. Jesus Communities
2. Civic Good

8. Systems that Work
9. Beauty & Creativity
We have learned over 20 years in our San Jose neighborhood that holistic transformation takes time. Because of this, we commit our lives to our neighbors for the long-haul, desiring to be leaders of patience, hope, grace, and strength to “stay in the game” when things get hard.
